Artist Statement

I moved from Minneapolis to Portland in 2003. The decision to come to Portland wasn’t a planned one, I closed my eyes and picked a spot on a map. For years, I saw myself as a midwesterner living and working in the Pacific Northwest, but when I started teaching that view began to change.

Currently, I am an art teacher at Wilson High School. Although teaching can be challenging, working with art students and helping them develop their own creative voice inspires me to continue making art. Students influence my work as much as I guide theirs. My sketchbooks are filled with images of students drawing, dinosaurs, anthropomorphic animals, and Sasquatch.

The phrase “You teach who you are” is familiar among those who work in education. My work has changed dramatically in the last 10 years, and so have I. Portland has instilled in me a love for nature, here I started hiking, gardening, and watching the wildlife. Portland is my home. The longer I live in this city, the more of Portland I see in myself and the stronger the city’s presence is in my artwork.
